WETLAND HABITAT AND RESTORATION ON THE FIR MOUNTAIN PROPERTY

In 1995, the scene you see here did not exist. Where there is now open water
and thriving plant communities that are home to a diverse array of aquatic
species, birds and terrestrial animals, there was only a trampled and heavily
grazed seasonally soggy field. The area was bisected by broken concrete
ditches, and littered with the remains of decades of human interference
with the natural drainage patterns and various land use schemes that were
      inappropriate to the area.

The story of how this was turned around and became, in the words of one
Oregon State Department of Fish and Wildlife officer, “the finest pond-wetland
ecosystem in North-Central Oregon” is here for you to enjoy. The Photographs
button will let you tour the wetlands and view some of the construction pictures.
Click on the Documents button to read reports by Inter-Fluve, Inc. who, planned,
designed and managed the operation. There are before and after photographs
and maps of the project area . There is also a report by a paleobotanist on the
results of pollen analysis from the excavation material that tell a fascinating story
of the forests on Fir Mountain thousands of years ago.
